Twelve months ago we were departing on what was to become a 2015-defining trip to Helsinki. Our event series The Tech Off was about to make a great leap forward….
This was the first time we really amped-up the theatrics of our ‘TED talk meets WWE’ event concept. And we decided to do it at the Eurobest Festival – a 25-year-old celebration of European creativity which travels to a different city each year. While we’d run a number of London based events, we – well I – thought that such a grand occasion befitted a grand approach from us.
Somehow I managed to convince our speakers – all extremely illustrious – to join in this grand plan, and run onto the stage (at midday, in front of 350 Finns) as we played a video of the bit in Rocky when he runs up the stairs. As it happened, one of our speakers – Martyn Ware – had just returned from Mexico city with some authentic wrestling garb, which our speakers gamely wore! To cap it off I chose to wear a Rocky-esque grey tracksuit…
I vividly remember the feeling as we waited for the crowd to fill the theatre. It was anxious dread. I could feel my professional credibility falling into a precipice of my own making. But by then it was too late, I’d committed and had to feel the fear, but do it anyway.
As you may have guessed, it all turned out swimmingly – people loved it and our theatrics added to the overall magic of the format, which continues to this day. We’d stumbled across something which has turned our attempt at “doing a business event” into a vital diary-date for anyone in the world of creative-tech.
In the last year we’ve been invited to take it to four different third party conferences – Trans IP’s Inspiration Centraal in Shoreditch (where queues literally went round the block), Cannes Lions Innovation Festival (where we doubled the usual attendance on our stage), The Festival of Marketing in London (where we were the most tweeted about event out of over 200), and to DMX in Dublin in March next year (which is still TBC). Suffice to say this is good for getting our name out there.
And that’s on top of our own “gigs” which have grown from 50 people in a Soho pub cellar, to 250 people in a Shoreditch nightclub. Complete with confetti cannons, strobe lights, comedy wrestlers and our now legendary foam fingers. We’ve also beefed up the web site, and even have our own Spotify playlist!
Our next event is NOT to be missed – it’s on Thursday 11th February. Click here to sign up now!
One thing’s for sure, we’ll continue to push things. I’m still trying to find the line which we shouldn’t cross. And I apologise in advance for when we eventually do cross it ;0)
So to celebrate a year worth celebrating, here’s some of our favourite photos from The Tech Off!Find this interesting?
